Cubs and Scouts from the 12th Lewisham South (1st Downham) have helped Channel 4’s Restoration Man George Clarke and The Croydon Steel Orchestra to open the new B&Q store at Bell Green Retail Park in Sydenham on Friday 2nd August.

After taking part in the rainy opening celebrations, our scouts were treated to a special DIY session with the store’s ‘Kids Can Do It’ team and George Clarke. After donning their orange aprons and listening to a quick safety talk, the group were eager to get their hands on the power tools to create their very own planter boxes.

Tom Nixon, Lewisham District Commissioner, attended the event with the scouts and said: “Scouting helps young people develop the skills needed in life. The types of skills that boys and girls can learn from the B&Q ‘Kids Can Do It’ classes are important practical skills that will hopefully help them in their future.

Both the Cubs and Scouts thoroughly enjoyed the session and I’d like to say a big thank you to the B&Q team.”

After forging links with The Scout Association in recent years, the retailer continues to support scouting through Scout Community Week, as well as providing online resources for the DIY badge. It is hoped that the opening of a new store in Lewisham will strengthen the relationship.
